ZOETROPE + PHOTOSHOP ANIMATION
We began the lesson by discussing the history of the 'Zoetrope' and thought about how 2D drawings can became an animation by twisting the circle like object. We were each given an A3 piece of card to which we folded in half vertically; we then measured and lined everything carefully and then cut slots in between each space to place your 2D image. I felt that I should experiment with something other then a walking man. So i chose to draw an eye, opening and closing. I put the the images together into a sequence of frames, this controlled the movement of the eye when turning fast in the 'Zoetrope'. However we didn't completely have the opportunity to make the actual 'Zoetrope' together, in which case we were given iPod touches and used the camera function, I took a picture of each frame and uploaded the images to iPhoto. After retrieving the images from iPhoto and imported them into Adobe Photoshop CS5. When the images opened into the photo editing program I made each frame look similar by changing the brightness and contrast, the reason to why I had done this was because I had lighting issues when taking the images I also added a vignette to bring more attention to the eye and to make it look as if the eye is peeping through. Once each frame looked alike I over-layed each photograph and used the 'Animation' tool on Photoshop. Once we selected the correct fps (frames per second) we exported the completed animation as a .GIF file so that when we open it into a browser we are able to see it move.

4 PIONEERS OF 2D ANIMATION...
The Lumiere Brothers
The Lumiere brothers (Louis and Auguste) were born in France, in 1862 and 1864, their father, Claude-Antoine Lumiere, ran a photographic firm to which both brothers worked for him. Louis had made some improvements to the still-photograph process, the most notable being the dry-plate process, which was a major step towards moving images. It was not until their father retired in 1892 that the brothers began to create moving images. The Lumiere’s held their first private screening of projected motion pictures in 1895. This history-making presentation featured ten short films. Each film is 17 meters long...
William Horner
William Horner was a British mathematician who had invented the 'Zoetrope' in 1834.
Proposal for 2D Animation
Brief:
“Complete a 2D animation with soundtrack, at around 30 seconds in duration.”
Idea One...
A zeotrope styled piece to which to hand drawn characters are dancing in the style of a Tango/Salsa...
Idea Two...
A car driving through the four seasons...
Idea Three...
A short that contrasts between reality and the animated world. A friendly war between two characters...
The Final Proposal:
The animation will consist of a mixture with reality and the animated world. To which two characters will encounter on a never-ending war between each other using a split-screen technique. The war will involve 2D drawings created on Adobe Flash. I will be drawing objects for the character to attack it’s opponent. Various ideas came to mind when thinking about what objects they could possibly use to throw at each other… I had thought about drawing a water pistol to which animated water releases and splashes his opponent. Another idea was that one character could take out his iPhone and takes the app icons from the phone in his hand to chuck at his opponent. The other character will do the same but use things like animated drawn shields, chucking a ball, playing an instrument really badly to agitate her opponent. The animation will end with a cowboy style showdown to which the short ends with a cliffhanger. The character will be filmed in front of a green screen so we are able to incorporate the animated flash drawings in time with the moving of the characters finger.
However both Salma and I are doing the same Idea; we plan on creating our own screens and animating everything ourselves…
